I’ll be honest with you, I wasn’t sure if counselling and therapy was for me the first time I stepped inside a therapists office. I’d been brought up to “get on with it” and “don’t make a fuss” and brush myself off and start all over if life got a little rocky. I felt that spending money on talking about me was a little self indulgent and at times convinced myself that things weren’t as bad as I thought they were - or at least there were others worse off - so what was I complaining about.

But therapy isn’t about complaining. It’s about understanding ourselves better. If we hide from what’s going on inside ourselves, it’s likely things might feel worse. You may not call me because you’re going through a major life transition or are have experienced a mind-altering trauma (though you may well be and I’m here for you).
It’s just that sometimes things might just feel a bit off.
Not quite right.
And when you think about it, you might have felt like this for a while. Rumination, intrusive thoughts, unspoken anger or sadness, a bereavement you never let yourself grieve…
You may have shrugged it off by working hard, focussing on the kids and filling your time whilst escaping you. You might have dulled your discomfort with food, sex, drink or by buying stuff - little pops of joy that somehow still don’t make you feel alright.
Until you came across this blog, or a social media post… or a friend suggested it might help to “talk to someone”.
They weren’t giving you the cold shoulder. They realised that you might benefit from working with a professional who can support you as you explore your feelings, help you understand your past to better navigate your future and help you see the tools available to live a more fulfilling life. It doesn’t happen after one session, and we may spend several months trying to learn why you feel like you do - we’ll identify triggers, seek to overcome risky behaviour and endeavour to work towards a happier, healthier you.
Counselling is for everyone. It doesn’t mean that anything is wrong - it’s a safe, confidential space to learn more about ourselves. It helps us have better relationships, be kinder to ourselves and be who we want to be.
